Teen Drinking and the effects of Alcoholism

Facebook and other Social Media

This collection of works was used in a mini-unit at the beginning of a 10th grade English class in an effort to begin the process of learning how to write for the 10th grade writing test. During and after reading/discussing these articles, the students were asked to write an Effects of Facebook essay (prompt can be found in the writing section of this site)

The following articles are about Megan Meyers, a young girl who killed herself after being harassed online by an ex-friend and her mother in the guise of a cute boy. Use these articles to discuss blame and methods of prevention.
These articles are more general about the effects of social media, giving the students multiple perspectives and possible effects. These could be given as homework assignments or read in conjunction with the Megan Meyer articles.

Bullying

Teen Pregnancy

These articles work well to spark discussion and debate, especially in high school classrooms. Such controversial issues are great fodder for evidence-based arguments and well-structured paragraphs.
